On the last day of Durga Puja, known as Dashami, the festivities commence with married women placing redsindoor (powder) on the idols of Goddess Durga. They then smear it on each other. In the evening, the idols are immersed in the water.

Before Maa Durga leaves for her heavenly abode, she is anointed with lots of sindoor. Sindoor khela is custom in which all the married women apply sindoor first to the idols of goddesses and then to each other. They are traditionally dressed in red and white saree for this function that is colourful and lots of fun.
